One of the highlights of Mexico and one with some of the most spectacular scenery in the world, is traveling through the Copper Canyon. The Copper Canyon is four times larger and 1462 feet deeper than the Grand Canyon. This region is both a wonder of nature and a unique time capsule. In spite of being just a day’s travel south of the American border, the Copper Canyon remains virtually unknown and unexplored by Americans or Canadians.

Few places in the world are capable of providing such a complete travel package: Impressive mountains, rock formations, spectacular views of the canyons, colonial cities and fascinating indigenous communities living as their ancestors once lived.

We gaze upon cascading waterfalls, ancient archeological sites and the dwellings of the shy Tarahumara Indians. They are the most primitive tribe in North America with over 50,000 semi nomadic natives still living and preserving their culture in the traditional style of their ancestors. The Tarahumara are known for running races that can last as long as two days.

Be sure to bring binoculars and plenty of film as the most scenic railroad in the world crosses 35 bridges and goes through 86 tunnels as it winds its way through the mountains and canyons. The railroad took 90 years to build and was completed in 1961. It is called the 'Eighth Wonder of the World' by Readers Digest and is probably the most scenic and dramatic train ride in this hemisphere.

In the last few years thousands of tourists have taken the Passenger Train Ride to enjoy the scenery and admire the engineering feat that takes this train through the famous Copper Canyon.

The railroad passes through many of Chihuahua’s most interesting cities including Creel, the gateway to the Copper Canyon, surrounded by ancient missions and lovely lakes; Divisadero, where travelers see spectacular views from this natural overlook; Bahuichivo, an ancient town founded by Jesuit Missionaries in the 17th century and El Fuerte, a picturesque colonial town founded in 1564.

The Copper Canyon provides an outdoor experience so shockingly pure and majestic that visitors feel as if they’ve entered into a whole new world. One of the unique features of this adventure is that a train ride is the only way to really experience the Canyon’s wonders first hand. The small towns off the beaten track provide just enough amenities to make this the trip of a lifetime.

The Copper Canyon trip is included in 2 tours on the website. Almost everyone that goes says it is the highlight of his or her trip. The 'Top & Bottom' tour is what you want to do on your Dream RV Vacation. If you really want a treat, go on the Ultimate Copper Canyon Trip, Do the 49-Day Copper Canyon Top & Bottom & Baja.

Tarahumara Indians:
Copper Canyon is home to the Tarahumara Indians, who settled in the canyon thousands of years ago from Asia. The word 'Tarahumara' means foot runner—an apt description of people whose endurance and speed are legendary. One of their feats is the ability to run down wild deer and turkeys on foot. The majority of Tarahumara live in caves along side riverbanks and in small log cabins along the canyon floor. At Divisadero’s market, travelers find groups of Tarahumara women and children making beautiful woven baskets, belts and wooden figures.
