Zacatecas, an old mining town founded on September
8, 1546, is a city of cobblestone streets,
pink colonial buildings and stone steps, all
in a medieval atmosphere. This is where Pancho
Villa defeated the forces of Victoriano Huerta
in 1914. Zacatecas is known as the “King’s
Mine.” This is a wonderful example of “Colonial
Mexico” and one of the most interesting towns
visited. One of the highlights of this trip
is a great dinner at “La Quinta Real” (old
restored bull ring). Afterward we watch a “Dancing
Waters” light show. The tour package also includes
a historic city tour, Guadalupe Convent, an
interesting Mask Museum, the Historical Center
and many other unique places.
San Miguel is a city with personality and charm
that has Spanish Architecture, pleasant plazas
and cobblestone streets. San Miguel has many
fine stores and galleries known, in particular,
for brass, copper, tin work, serapes, blue glassware
and those heavy wool sweaters. The city has been
declared a national monument which means that
all new construction must be colonial style –
no modern architecture. The town was originally
named San Miguel for the Franciscan Monk who
founded the place in 1540 and is considered Mexico’s
most “typical” colonial village. It is one of
Mexico’s most attractive and interesting towns.
It has a large population of Americans as it
attracts artists, writers, students, world travelers
and those seeking retirement. Note: We take a
guided bus tour to Guanajuato from San Miguel.
We are in for a treat in Colonial Guanajuato,
a charming, picturesque city of tunnels, magnificent
trees and lovely plazas. It is a photographer’s
delight. Included is a city bus tour, lunch
and entrance fees to see special places and
exhibits including the Diego Rivera Museum
and a silver mine. The town of Guanajuato is
absolutely the Greatest! This is one of the
top attractions of your entire trip. You’ve
never seen anything quite like it – it’s Taxco,
San Miguel, Morelia and Queretaro all rolled
up into one beautiful city that’s delightfully
different. Not only is it naturally charming,
but a farsighted ex-governor has made it even
more so by building a terrific Subterranean
Boulevard underneath the city! Note: We tour
Guanajuato by bus while staying in San Miguel.
We fall in love with the colonial architecture
and old world charm of Guadalajara. Scheduled
are four days of bus tours to see Guadalajara
and surrounding areas including Tequila, Tonala,
Tlaquepaque, Lake Chapala and Ajijic. We also
enjoy shopping at the world famous Mercado
Libertad as this is the best place in Mexico,
if shopping is one of your favorite things
to do.
A city of great interest is Puebla, known in particular
for its carved onyx and famous Talavera-style
ceramics and tile. We tour this lovely city as
well as Cholula where we see the great Pyramid
of Tepanampa. It is the largest Pyramid in the
world with a perimeter of over a mile.
You don’t want to miss Oaxaca. Here we enjoy
three full days of bus tours with our excellent
guide Eugene. We explore the Monte Alban Ruins
and many interesting areas including the famous
and most impressive Tule tree. It is said to
be the oldest living thing in the World at
2,000 years of age and 49 meters around at
its base. We visit the nearby villages known
for their specialized craftsmanship including
Teotitlan del Valle (sarapes and rugs), Coyotepec
(world renown black pottery artisans) and Ocatlan
(woodcarvers).
In Villahermosa you tour La Venta Parque, site
of the Olmec Heads and oldest civilization in
Mexico.
You get VIP treatment and great hospitality as
we are special guests at a fantastic regional
area dinner and a cultural show that knocks
your socks off.
This is one of the most unique areas of Mexico.
Our guide takes us for a visit to the indigenous
mountain communities of Chamula and Zinacantin
to visit the cemetery, a church and house of
traditional Mayordomo Religious Authority,
House of Weavings, a very unique native craft
market plus other interesting and unusual sights.
We visit the Palenque Ruins which is one of the
most popular ruins in North America. Some of
our tours enjoy a full day bus tour to the
waterfalls of Agua Azul and Misol Ha as part
of their tour package.
We stay at an RV park conveniently located near
the Teotihuacan Ruins about 20 miles outside
Mexico City. We use this as our base for our
two-day excursion into Mexico City. We have a
bus with professional guide at your disposal
for two exciting days to see and enjoy the city,
Teotihuacan ruins, pyramids of the Sun and Moon,
floating gardens gondola ride, Plaza of the Three
Cultures, Museum of Anthropology, the National
Palace, Shrine of The Virgin of Guadalupe, luncheon
and mariachis in Teotihuacan, Obsidian factory,
a “Pulque” demonstration plus many other interesting
sites and places.
